2019 Volunteer of the Year: Megan Benson
Megan has been volunteering at Exodus since 2017. She started off as a youth mentor for one of our young ladies from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Megan developed a wonderful friendship with her mentee as she helped her navigate a new culture and achieve personal goals, like studying for the driver’s test and doing homework. When Exodus decided to create a new Women’s Art Circle, we immediately thought of Megan, because she also happens to be a talented artist. Since then, she’s joined us almost every week to teach sewing skills and do other art projects with our ladies. Through the art circle, she brings joy and empowerment to some of our most vulnerable clients. She has given them a safe space to not only learn a new skill, but also form a sisterhood. Megan has shown nothing but kindness, compassion, and patience to our ladies, and they love spending time with her. One of the ladies in the art circle said, “I look forward to coming to the art circle every week. It is a time to focus on myself and spend it with my friends. It is my favorite part of the week.” The Women’s Art Circle would not be what it is today without Megan, and we grateful for all of her hard work and effort. You can read more about Megan here.
